Creative Support Alternatives provides supported living services to people with developmental disabilities

Mary Ellen Sousa

Mary Ellen Sousa, Director, has been collaborating with people with developmental disabilities for over 25 years.  In 1992, she co-founded Creative Support Alternatives, an innovative Supported Living/Independent Living project within Interwork Institute/SDSU and SDSURF.  Creative Support Alternatives provides person-centered, comprehensive supports that enable people to live in homes of their own (regardless of the severity of disability) and become valued participating members of their chosen communities.  Services are funded through the San Diego Regional Center in San Diego, and Valley Mountain Regional Center in Calaveras and Amador Counties (Northern California).  Prior to her work with Creative Support Alternatives, Mary Ellen worked as Adjunct Faculty in the College of Education at SDSU, Project Coordinator positions within Interwork Institute, Consultant to state and national grant projects (focusing on persons with disabilities, community living, transition services and supported employment).  She has also served in positions of Vocational Teacher, Special Education High School/Transition Teacher, and Registered Recreation Therapist.

Mary Ellen holds a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Maryland-College Park, Maryland teaching credentials, and a Bachelors degree in Recreation Therapy from San Francisco State University.  She serves on the Board of Directors of the statewide advocacy group Cal-TASH, is a founding member of both the Homeownership Coalition of San Diego and the Micro-Business Coalition, and is a member of the NoCA Choices Conference Committee.
